A SCHEDULE FOR ALL UCLA GRADUATE ANIMATION STUDENTS - FALL 2007-2008

The following is the basic program for Animation Graduate students, please refer to the 2006-2007
Animation course and teaching schedule at the bottom of this page for actual times and location.

 

FIRST YEAR

Fall

181A - Animation Design in Film and Television - 4 units
181B - Writing for Animation - 4-8 units
482A - Drawing - 4 units
488B - Layout - 4 units (Optional)

If you have completed 181ABC and have finished your first film as an undergraduate
you can start as a second year student, but you will need to take the seminar.

Winter

181C - Animation Workshop - 8 units
209D - Seminar in the Animated Film - 4 units.
Will be given in the Spring 2007.
482B - Drawing - 4 units


*Falling Lizard -
around the 2nd or 3rd weekend of the Winter Quarter - every year.

Do not take another production course - you will not have enough time.

Spring

181C - Animation Workshop - 8 unitsFinish your first animated film.
178 - For work on your 181C project.
487 - Post production Lab
(Grad level units for 181c)

You could take elective / required course(s) if you have finished your film and have some spare time.

 

SECOND YEAR

The required courses in production and critical studies should be taken in the second or third year.
Electives can be taken at anytime.

Begin your Thesis. You should have finished your required animation courses by now. With a completed
project in: Traditional Animation, Interactive animation and Computer animation.
Your thesis project can be in traditional, animation narrative, experimental, any content
or style for any idea, for any purpose. It is your film and purpose. It should be good.

WINTER

You can take a leave of absence or enroll in:

FT 596's - For Thesis credit

(Electives can be taken)

SPRING

You can take a leave of absence or enroll in:

FT 596's - For Thesis credit.

(Electives can be taken)

 

 

SUGGESTED ELECTIVES

 

Drawing - For character animation you should be drawing all the time. ASIFA and the Union
have classes.

Editing - Especially for those without any film background - the language of film.

Acting - For those in character animation, remember you are the actor or actress.

Sound - Designing, mixing and using sound creativly - this can make your film.

Camera - For lighting of 3D computer animation and especially puppet animation.

And any of these: Design film, Computer programing, Directing, Movement, Painting,
Perspective, Design, Color, Mythology, Life, Love.

 

ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

 


We have a library of books,Tapes, Laserdisks and DVD's - you will need to read, look, analyze and learn from
these to be a good filmmaker of animation. Internships are availbale and are helpful,
especially if you know where you want to go and there is freelance work available.
But both take time away from your education and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
