A conversation with Zora Xu

What animated character do you most embody in your day-to-day life?

I rarely think about it, but lately, since I’ve been feeling like staying home all the time, I’d say I’m closest to Ennui from *Inside Out 2* at the moment.

What moments stand out to you since you’ve been at the workshop?

The process of animating for the first time using a completely hand-drawn, traditional approach made a significant impression on me. It has given me a deep appreciation for the immense effort animators used to put into their work.

What is something about UCLA that sets it apart from other institutions in your academic experience?

UCLA emphasizes developing students' independence and general skills more than other schools, which sets it apart from other institutions.

What are some challenges you see animators facing today, and how does UCLA prepare you for these challenges?

Today’s animators face challenges such as navigating the depressed art market and balancing commercial demands with artistic creation. UCLA prepares us for these challenges by focusing on overall abilities, providing valuable resources like lectures and film festivals, and helping us become more adaptable in our careers.

What is something you’ve made while at the workshop that you’re proud of?

I’m very proud of my first-year film, *Don’t Ruin The Movie.* It was my first project in many ways, and hearing the applause and laughter from the audience after the screening made all the hard work feel worthwhile.
