A conversation with Ru Deng
I relate to Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph the most. Because her optimism of pursuing what she loves mirror my enthusiasm for animation. I'm always eager to deal with challenges with a positive attitude, my curiosity and passion for learning animation make me feel connected to Vanellope.
One of the most profound moments of my time learning at the workshop was when we created traditional animations using pencils, paper and light boxes. In the era dominated by digital tools, it felt beautiful and magical to use the same techniques that the animators used in the earliest days, like those who worked on Snow White. While holding the pencil and trying my best to make the drawings come to life on papers, I got a strong sense of connection to the history of animation, which was both exciting and deeply moving to experience.
Seeing my film on the screen at James Bridges Theater for sure! It's not just about personal pride, but also about the shared joy—watching our own films with family and friends is a highlight of the workshop for everyone. I'm incredibly grateful that Animation Workshop values our projects and provides us with such opportunities, which has greatly boosted my confidence and passion in pursuing the career I love.
